On Saturday, July 3rd, The Boston Pops organization paid tribute to Nona Gainsforth, The Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra’s 30-year veteran French Horn player. Diagnosed with Breast Cancer in 2005, Nona passed away on June 11th. In her three decades with the Boston Pops, Nona’s extended family reached far and wide, having worked with musicians from across the globe. Colleague and friend Gary Ofenloch said, "Nona was loved by everyone. She was a great player, and a great mother, and she is deeply missed by all."

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is unquestionably one of the most prolific and most loved composers of classical music. Composing his first melody at the age of five, his first symphony at age eight and his final work, the [unfinished] Requiem Mass in D minor when he was 35, Mozart is credited with more than 600 works. In his short 30 years of composing, Mozart averaged two published compositions per month. Brilliant!

The first dance of the Ballet West Academy Spring Performance was called Retro Shifts. As I sat and watched this intriguing, thoughtful and quietly expressive dance, the word that kept popping into my head was ‘brilliant’. The Ballet West Academy, its administration and staff have to be commended on their hard work. The relationships they have formed with each other and their dancers shows in the quality of their dancers, performances and productions.

The University of Utah’s Lyric Opera Ensembles’ production of Dialogues of the Carmelites was my first opera. No one warned me that I would need to bring a box of Kleenex! I was completely absorbed by the passion and emotion of all that was playing out before me and at the end of the evening, I had a lump in my throat, my stomach was in knots and I was searching my bag for tissues. Dialogues of the Carmelites is an emotional opera and the University of Utah’s Lyric Opera Ensemble is outstanding. Bravo!

This season I was fortunate to be able to attend Utah Symphony performances in Salt Lake City and one of my favorites was Dvořák’s “New World” Symphony. I saw a number of guest conductors and artists present wonderful performances by Mozart, Dvořák, Rachmaninoff and Smetana, and I was particularly moved by Mahler's 2nd Symphony in the Salt Lake Tabernacle led by Keith Lockhart. The 2009-10 season was remarkable, and the 2010-11 season promises even more!

On May 12th I had a great opportunity to attend a “contemporary” concert in Boston. Existential Pilot was capping off its spring tour with a concert at First Church in Boston and I received an invitation to attend. Some people hear the word contemporary and they go running for Beethoven or Mozart. I’ve discovered that there are some types of sounds that are really in the ear of the composer, and then there are others that should be in the ears of the patrons. Existential Pilot belongs in the latter category.

The combination of Maestro Terence Kern and the Utah Chamber Orchestra’s Serenade for Strings (Tchaikovsky) and the ethereal Ballet West dancers bathed in blue was simply breathtaking. Such serenity, such beauty. It was my favorite ballet moment ever.

This weekend, the Utah Symphony presented Verdi’s Requiem. I had no idea what it was, but I knew it involved the Utah Symphony, a large chorus, and 4 soloists – a soprano, a mezzo-soprano, a tenor, and a bass baritone. Oh, and I presumed it would not be in English. There is so much about Verdi’s Requiem that I absolutely loved. The music, the singers, the orchestration – it was all amazing!

Any time an artist graces the stage at such a young age, there is surely something spectacular, and with his first performance with the symphony at age 9, he must have some great talent. I was really looking forward to hearing how good this kid was!

As I arrived at Abravanel Hall and watched hundreds of children stream through the doors, I wondered why there aren’t more of these types of concerts. How exciting it was to see so many kids at the Symphony! For less than the cost of a night at the movies, I had the opportunity to hear a wonderful Mozart piece, I heard fabulous singers, I laughed a lot and had so much fun! Tara Faircloth’s adaptation was brilliant. What a great introduction to the opera for kids and adults alike.

As Ballet West’s Artistic Director, Adam Sklute takes an idea, molds it and presents his labor of love to the ballet patrons of Salt Lake City. As the curtain rises at the Capitol Theatre, the question he likely asks is, “will you see it as I see it?” I answer, how can I not? Adam Sklute clearly has a vision for Ballet West, and I believe it is to bring out the best in the dancers and to bring the best productions to Salt Lake City and beyond.

With the myriad of choices, how do you decide which performance(s) to attend? Since I have a hard time choosing just one I'll be attending three; Le Nozze di Figaro, Ballet West and Utah Symphony! All of the Performing Arts are struggling financially. Help keep these Arts alive and thriving by supporting the artists. Go enjoy a show!

December is a wonderful time to go to the ballet. At no other time during the year will you see more children embracing the love of the ballet as they are exposed to the artistry of dance, music and the imagination of the Nutcracker. The Nutcracker is where dreams begin, and for the parents and grandparents sitting alongside their little dreamers, it is a dream shared through generations.
