“We’re extremely excited to finally bring the NOH8 Campaign to Utah”, said Parshley. “In 2008, Prop 8 had strong support from the Salt Lake-based LDS Church, resulting in national controversy and animosity towards the Church. Since then, Americans have largely shifted towards tolerance and equality, and while California’s same-sex ban is currently under federal appeal, six states and the District of Columbia now allow same-sex marriages, and five states now allow same-sex civil unions.”

Gethsemane has been my favorite song from JCS since I can remember. The lyrics are evocative and emotional and to hear Ted Neeley sing this live was a dream come true. No one can feel its power or embody Jesus’ pain, doubt, or resolve more than Ted who has performed this some 2,000 times throughout his career. It was a moment, and if you need but one reason to see Jesus Christ Superstar in Park City, this is it. And it’s the reason that I’ll be going back to see it once more before it ends.

I love the depth that the character Dracula has. I love the individuality of all the Draculas -- Beau Pearson, Christopher Anderson and me -- that we can be such different Draculas. Whether it’s the insane Dracula, the blood hungry Dracula, or the controlling Dracula, there are so many different moods and dimensions to this character. This guy’s been around for hundreds and hundreds of years, and you can only begin to tap into what you think are the emotions that he might have gone through and try to express them. It’s really amazing, the character development that you can do with this guy. And every day, playing with his character is different and changing, and it’s truly unlimited what you can do with this part as far as acting is concerned.

Ballet West opened its 2010-2011 season with George Balanchine’s The Four Temperaments and Carmina Burana. The two ballets were an interesting pairing that worked very well. The Four Temperaments presented dancers portraying the four humors (basic substances in the body that were once said to make up our state of health), and Carmina Burana is meant to portray life’s Wheel of Fortune with celebration, love, desire, despair and fate. Each ballet touches upon the core of humanity, reaching directly into our soul.

On Saturday, July 3rd, The Boston Pops organization paid tribute to Nona Gainsforth, The Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra’s 30-year veteran French Horn player. Diagnosed with Breast Cancer in 2005, Nona passed away on June 11th. In her three decades with the Boston Pops, Nona’s extended family reached far and wide, having worked with musicians from across the globe. Colleague and friend Gary Ofenloch said, "Nona was loved by everyone. She was a great player, and a great mother, and she is deeply missed by all."

The first dance of the Ballet West Academy Spring Performance was called Retro Shifts. As I sat and watched this intriguing, thoughtful and quietly expressive dance, the word that kept popping into my head was ‘brilliant’. The Ballet West Academy, its administration and staff have to be commended on their hard work. The relationships they have formed with each other and their dancers shows in the quality of their dancers, performances and productions.

The University of Utah’s Lyric Opera Ensembles’ production of Dialogues of the Carmelites was my first opera. No one warned me that I would need to bring a box of Kleenex! I was completely absorbed by the passion and emotion of all that was playing out before me and at the end of the evening, I had a lump in my throat, my stomach was in knots and I was searching my bag for tissues. Dialogues of the Carmelites is an emotional opera and the University of Utah’s Lyric Opera Ensemble is outstanding. Bravo!

This season I was fortunate to be able to attend Utah Symphony performances in Salt Lake City and one of my favorites was Dvořák’s “New World” Symphony. I saw a number of guest conductors and artists present wonderful performances by Mozart, Dvořák, Rachmaninoff and Smetana, and I was particularly moved by Mahler's 2nd Symphony in the Salt Lake Tabernacle led by Keith Lockhart. The 2009-10 season was remarkable, and the 2010-11 season promises even more!

On May 12th I had a great opportunity to attend a “contemporary” concert in Boston. Existential Pilot was capping off its spring tour with a concert at First Church in Boston and I received an invitation to attend. Some people hear the word contemporary and they go running for Beethoven or Mozart. I’ve discovered that there are some types of sounds that are really in the ear of the composer, and then there are others that should be in the ears of the patrons. Existential Pilot belongs in the latter category.
