December is a wonderful time to go to the ballet. At no other time during the year will you see more children embracing the love of the ballet as they are exposed to the artistry of dance, music and the imagination of the Nutcracker. The Nutcracker is where dreams begin, and for the parents and grandparents sitting alongside their little dreamers, it is a dream shared through generations.

With Christmas just around the corner, some of Salt Lake City’s finest musicians are planning to celebrate Christmas with a song. Mezzo-Sopranos Stina Eberhardt and Ana Mihanovic, Bass-Baritone and Pianist Jed Moss, Tenor Robert Breault and Soprano Clara Hurtado Lee will be performing a wide range of Christmas music that spans a millennium! Whether the music is traditional or a new arrangement, the artists promise some surprises along the way. (Dec. 22, 7pm, Dumke Recital Hall, Salt Lake City)

Utah’s Ballet West Gala 2009 Dazzles in Sixty… (2)

I am amazed that more than 130 Ballet West dancers came together to present a showcase of seven works in a mere 60 minutes. Ballet West not only Dares Us To Dream, it encourages bringing every would-be dancer’s dream to life. The hour long Gala was a celebration of dance and music. How lucky we are to have these artists encouraging us to “let go” and be enchanted for an evening.

The MBTA transports a million people daily throughout Massachusetts. In April, the MBTA began a program called “See Something, Say Something.” I saw something, I said something, and the T did nothing. Not happy.

Fred Lerdahl Honored As Maurice Abravanel Distinguished Composer (Comments Off)

On November 4th, 2009, the Canyonlands New Music Ensemble presents the Maurice Abravanel Visiting Distinguished Composer Series and honors Composer Fred Lerdahl. A highly-regarded composer, Lerdahl has been composing for more than 45 years, writing Piano Fantasy in 1964 while ‘under the spell’ of his first summer at Tanglewood. Among his many accolades, Lerdahl is a recipient of the Koussevitzky Composition Prize and has been a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in music.

Renee Fleming Gives First NYC Master Class at Juilliard (Comments Off)

On October 20th, world renowned Soprano Renee Fleming returned to her Alma Mater Juilliard to give her first New York Master Class. A benefit for Juilliard, the event also marked the re-dedication of the Peter Jay Sharp Theater. Fleming’s words of wisdom come in the form of her own experience; Fleming says she is and will always be a student, and that she hasn’t mastered anything yet!

Utah’s Ballet West Dares Us to Dream (2)

Salt Lake City’s Ballet West opened its 2009-2010 season with The Dream. Artistic Director Adam Sklute chose three diverse works for the season’s first program; Songs of the Valley, Three Preludes and The Dream. It was a wonderful performance accompanied by the music of Copland, Rachmaninoff and Mendelssohn!
